About the Musicians:
Souren Baronian, reedman/percussionist extraordinaire, is the Prez of Armenian-American musicians. His playing and his writing are a true synthesis of jazz and authentic Near Eastern music, born of his extensive experience in both areas. On the ethnic side, he trained with the renowned Turkish master Safet Gundeger, and on the jazz side with the legendary Lennie Tristano. He recorded with such jazz lights as Phil Woods, Don Jerry, Joe Beck, Arnie Lawrence, Carla Bley, Paul Motian, Joe Farrel, Steve Gadd, Armen Donelian and others, while continuing to lead ethnic ensembles in performance and on recordings. In 1975 Souren assembled a quintet of kindred spirits capable of pursuing his musical vision, and named this group "Taksim," a word which in the Near East refers to improvised melodic exploration. Before long Souren and his band were surprising audiences regularly at important jazz venues in New York, Boston and Philadelphia, and earning a glowing review from Downbeat Magazine. They are now enjoying their third decade of critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. http://www.rayhana.com/souren_baronian/souren_baronian.html
Without a doubt, a major contributor to the NTC downtown jazz, rock, and avant-garde scenes,
Dean Bowman is an accomplished, "massively talented" vocalist and performance/recording artist. In 2007 and 2008, Dean Bowman brings his considerable skills to Europe, recording and performing with Arminc Alic in Germany, Marie Afonso Fremaux in the south of France, and forming groups in Munich, Marseille, and Amsterdam, recording and performing the music of legendary songstress
(and Miles' former wife) Betty Davis with Mikaele Pelligrini in Rome, and the music of Albert Ayler with Laurent Bardaine in Paris. http://deanbowman.net/
DK Dyson travels comfortably through music categories such as Jazz, R&B, Pop, Rock and World Music, defying boundaries. She co-led the Sony / Epic band EYE & I, known for vibrant live shows, with DK as its focal point. The group broke down racial and musical stereotypes with a sound that married heavy Rock and Funk with Jazz smarts. The recording of EYE & I on Epic Records was released to great critical acclaim and Dyson was nominated by the NY Music Awards as Best New Female Vocalist. Her diverse range is documented by recordings and performances with Living Colour, Don Byron, Steve Coleman, Caetano Veloso, Paulinho De Costa, Ornette Coleman and the Jazz Passengers (performing with Marvis Staples and Debbie Harry). DK's soulful voice can be heard in the film by Thomas Allen Harris "That's My Face". Recently she scored the short film “The Task” and composed and performed the television theme songs for the syndicated shows “Our World” and “Black Business Report” Her voice has been heard on various jingles including Budweiser, Finesse, and Coca-Cola. http://www.myspace.com/dkdyson
